Researchers from the University of Maryland Dental School found the cause men often toothache is due to sex steroid hormones. The existence of sex steroid hormones are behind the increased risk of periodontal disease (tooth decay) in men.
“To develop better management and periodontal disease risk assessment model, we have published the first comprehensive study of gender differences in the development of periodontal disease,” says Mark Reynolds, professor at the University of Maryland Dental School, as reported by Medindia on Tuesday (2 / 11 / 2010).
Prof Reynolds explained that this is biological evidence for sexual dimorphismamong men and women. Steroid hormones have effects on the inflammatory immune system and also have an effect on oral health. or differences in susceptibility to periodontal disease
“The root of the difference also is genetic,” said Prof Reynolds.
It is also believed by Harlan Shiau, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland Dental School. According to him, differences in gene regulation, particularly in response to sex steroid genes, tend to play a role in sexual dimorphism in destructive periodontal disease.
Before doing this study, researchers also conducted a systematic review of research on the prevalence of periodontal disease. In his analysis, he does have a higher prevalence of periodontal disease than women globally.
These findings have been published in the Journal of Periodontology.
